  13.      These instructions tell how to identify a virus with the
  14. VIRUSCAN program and remove the virus with the CLEAN-UP program. 
  15. They are intended to provide the person with a virus infection an 
  16. emergency means to identify and remove an infection.  They are not
  17. meant to replace the program documentation.  Please read through
  18. the documentation for detailed instructions.

  20.      Files ending in a .DOC extension have been formatted for
  21. printing on a printer with a minumum of 60 lines per page.  Files
  22. ending in a .TXT extension have not been formatted.

  25. VIRUSCAN (SCAN)
  26.  
  27. 1.   Copy all the VIRUSCAN files to a floppy disk.
  28.  
  29. 2.   WRITE PROTECT THE DISK!!!
  30.  
  31. 3.   Insert the disk into the infected PC and type:
  32.  
  33. SCAN C: D: E: 
  34.  
  35.      This will allow VIRUSCAN to run on the C:, D:, and E: drives. 
  36. If you do not have D: and E: drives, leave them out.
  37.  
  38. 4.   If infected files are found, they may be ERASED by running
  39. VIRUSCAN with the /D (overwrite and delete) option:
  40.  
  41. SCAN C: D: E: /D 
  42.  
  43.      Running VIRUSCAN with the /D option will delete files in a way
  44. that is non-recoverable.  Use this option only if you do NOT want
  45. to recover any of the infected files.  Otherwise use the CLEAN-UP
  46. universal virus disinfector.
  47.  
  48. 5.   Turn computer off to remove the virus from memory.

  51. CLEAN-UP (CLEAN)
  52.  
  53. 1.   Copy all the CLEAN-UP files to a floppy disk.
  54.  
  55. 2.   WRITE PROTECT THE DISK!!!
  56.  
  57. 3.   Power down the infected system and then boot from a clean,
  58.      write protected system master diskette.  Note: If you are
  59.      unable to reference all of the logical drives on your hard
  60.      disk after you have booted from a floppy, then check to make
  61.      sure that you have included on the floppy -- and in your
  62.      CONFIG.SYS -- any special purpose device drivers necessary to
  63.      access your hard disk.

  65. 4.   Insert the CLEAN-UP disk into the infected PC and type:
  66.  
  67. CLEAN C: D: E: [virus ID code] 
  68.  
  69.      This will allow CLEAN-UP to disinfect viruses on the C:, D:,
  70. and E: drives.  If you do not have D: and E: drives, leave them
  71. out.  
  72.  
  73.      For the Jerusalem virus, the ID code is [JERU].  For the
  74. Stoned virus, the ID code is [STONED].  For other viruses, use the
  75. ID code generated by SCAN, or check the VIRLIST.TXT file.  Remember
  76. to include the square brackets, "[" and "]."
  77.  
  78.      If you are disinfecting a file infector virus, such as the
  79. Jerusalem, it is recommended that you add the /A switch to the
  80. command line to check all files.  This will ensure that the virus
  81. is removed from any overlay files that may not use the defaault
  82. overlay extensions recognized by Clean-up.  If you know that none
  83. of your programs use overlays, then the /A switch is not necessary.

  85. 5.   Turn the computer off and then re-boot from the hard disk.

  88. AN IMPORTANT NOTE
  89. You have now completed a virus disinfection of your computer
  90. system, however, you may have other computers and floppy disks
  91. that are infected.  You know have a clean PC from which to
  92. scan and clean them.  Please take the time now to read through
  93. the VIRUSCAN and CLEAN-UP documentation to show you the fastest
  94. and safest way of removing your computer virus infection.
